Greenville faces tough challenge in opener

Greenville High School’s toughest challenge of the season will likely come right out of the gate.

The Tigers, who posted a 7-4 record in 2010, will kick off the regular season Aug. 26 on the road against Class 6A Wetumpka High School.

The game is a rematch of the 2010 opener, which saw the Indians claim a 28-20 win en route to a 10-2 season.

Wetumpka is one of five teams on Greenville’s schedule that posted a winning record last season and just one of two to win more than six games.

Following its showdown with Wetumpka, Greenville will travel to Tuscaloosa to kick off its region slate against Central Tuscaloosa High School before playing its home opener Sept. 9 against region foe Paul Bryant High School.

Three of the Tigers first four games will be played on the road before they finish the season with four of the final six games at Tiger Stadium, including matchups with region rivals Charles Henderson High School, Demopolis High School and Selma High School.

The Tigers will also play host to Class 6A Sidney Lanier High School in the regular-season finale.

Greenville will host Carver High School in a preseason game slated for Aug. 19 at Tiger Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
