LBW hires new faculty

LBW Community College President Dr. Herb Riedel announced the recent appointment of new faculty at all campus locations.

“We are very pleased and excited about the level of instructional services for students through the selection of highly qualified and experienced faculty,” said Riedel. “We are also pleased to have, for the first time, financial aid assistance full-time on the Greenville campus.”

On the Andalusia campus, Maria Thigpen was selected for the position of social science instructor. After obtaining a law degree in Colombia, South America, she earned a Master of Science Degree in international relations from Troy University, where she also completed credentialing in the disciplines of geography, history and political science. She taught courses in these areas as adjunct instructor with LBWCC and Troy University. In addition, Thigpen has taught Spanish through the LBWCC Upward Bound program since 2003.

Selected for the Greenville campus are Kelly Jones as mathematics instructor, Christy Hutcheson as English instructor, and Breshawn Skinner as assistant director of financial aid.

Jones holds a Bachelor of Aviation Management Degree from Auburn University, Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in mathematics from Columbus State University and Master of Science in mathematics from University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has more than 10 years experience as a college mathematics instructor.

Hutcheson holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree with an English major from the University of Alabama, a Juris Doctorate from the College of William and Mary, and Master of Arts Degree with an English major from the University of South Alabama. She has four years teaching experience on the postsecondary level.

Skinner earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in sociology from Auburn University at Montgomery will soon complete final courses for a Master’s Degree in postsecondary education from Troy University. She has more than 10 years of experience in financial aid experience at postsecondary institutions. Skinner will serve Greenville campus students in financial aid processing.

On the MacArthur campus, selected for full-time positions are registered nurses Karen Walker,  April Wise, and Tawanna Young in the nursing program; David Brawner, welding instructor; Allen Teel, industrial electronics instructor; Shannon Graham, English instructor; Susan Manring, diagnostic medical sonography program director and instructor; and Candy Watkins, therapeutic massage instructor.

Walker and Wise earned a Master of Science Degree from South University and each have four years experience as a nursing instructor or clinical facilitator on the postsecondary level. Walker has experience in the medical field with direct patient care, serving as RN charge nurse, and director of case management. Wise’s medical field experience includes direct patient care as emergency department and medical surgical nurse.

Young holds a Master of Science in Nursing Degree from Troy University is a board certified family nurse practitioner. She has more than 10 years experience working as education and charge nurse, psychiatric nurse, and postsecondary level clinical nursing instruction.

Brawner was selected as full-time welding instructor. He holds several welding certifications, including the American Welding Society’s certifications for welding instructor and welding inspector. He has more than 30 years field experience in the welding industry.

Teel was selected to fill the full-time position of industrial electronics instructor. He earned an Associate of Arts Degree from Enterprise State Community College and has more than 17 years experience in the fields of electronics and both commercial and residential electricity.

Graham, MacArthur campus full-time English instructor, earned an Associate of Science Degree from LBWCC, a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree from Faulkner University, and a Master of Science Degree in postsecondary education with majors in English and speech from Troy University. She has both adjunct and full-time teaching experience through her previous employment with LBWCC.

Manring earned an Associate in Science Degree from Enterprise State Junior College and a diagnostic medical sonography certificate from the Florida Institute of Ultrasound.  She is certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography in OB/GYN, cardiac and breast sonography, as well as vascular technology. She has more than 13 years experience in the medical field and within LBWCC’s DMS program.

Watkins has more than nine years experience in the practice of massage therapy. She earned an Associate of Science Degree and an Associate in Applied Science Degree in computer information systems from LBWCC. She is licensed as a massage therapist by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks and as an instructor by the Alabama Board of Massage Therapy. She also holds certification as a sports massage therapist.
