The Greenville Dixie Angels just might start going by a new name.

A pair of one-run wins at the Sub-District 1 tournament in Opp has fans calling the squad “The Heart Attack Kids.”

It’s fitting, according to head coach Kimberly Langford.

“There were a couple of close ones,” she said. “I think the parents and fans were a little nervous, but it didn’t seem to bother the girls too much. They didn’t give in to the pressure.”

Greenville opened the tournament with an 8-7 win against Zion Chapel on Thursday to set up a Friday showdown with tournament-host Opp, but heavy rain in the area forced tournament officials to move the game to Saturday.

Once Greenville finally did get on the field with Opp, it cruised to a 9-2 win and a spot in the tournament’s championship game. In the title game, Greenville squeaked out a 3-2 win against Crenshaw County Monday.

“The girls really pulled together and played well,” Langford said. “It was a total team effort. I was proud of them.”

Now Greenville has its sights set on a district championship.

“I feel good about our chances,” Langford said. “I think the girls are playing with a lot of confidence right now. They really believe in each other and that’s important.”

Another key for the Greenville squad entering district play is depth in the pitcher’s circle. According to Langford, the team has six pitchers capable of coming in at any point in a game.

“That’s a huge benefit,” the coach said. “Carl Stanford has worked with our pitchers and he deserves a lot of credit. I feel like we can pitch any one of them at any time and have a chance to win.”

Greenville will open district play Friday against the winner of Sub-District 3. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Geneva.
