The City of Greenville will join with Butler County in helping its residents keep a little change in their pockets.

A week after the Butler County Commission voted to approve a resolution to participate in the state sales tax holiday, the Greenville City Council voted unanimously Monday to authorize the city’s participation in the sales tax holiday.

“This is something we have done for the last five or six years,” Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon said.

Alabama’s sales tax holiday covers clothing, school supplies, books, computers and computer equipment.
Each county and municipality in Alabama decides if it will waive local sales tax, collect a portion or not participate in the sales-tax-free weekend. Both Butler County and the City of Greenville have participated in the holiday since its inception in 2006.

Alabama’s sales tax holiday is slated for Aug. 5-7. The holiday will begin at 12:01 a.m. Aug. 5 and end at midnight Aug. 7.

Other actions included:
* Ratifying payments to Bryan Tree Service, LLC for Sherling Lake Debris Removal due to the April 15 tornado damage.
* Authorizing a $5,000 allocation to the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce for Celebrate America.
* Approval of an ordinance adding Section 1404.5 to the Code of Ordinances for the City of Greenville, Alabama, Appendix A – Zoning. The change sets a six-month time limit on variances granted by the Board of Adjustments.
* Announced that beginning today, the Summer Feeding site on Baptist Hill will move from the Baptist Center to the boardroom of the old Butler County Board of Education building at 215 Administrative Dr.
*Approved the following expenditures:
– $1,181.15 to L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital for the treatment of prisoner Derrick Loveless on May 15.
– $1,282.24 to McKinley Tire for four Firestone tires for the Sanitation Department limb truck.
– $1,117 refund to Margaret Godwin for an overpayment on an ambulance fee.
– $4,000 to J&J Quality Lawn Care Service for lawn service performed on Magnolia Cemetery from June 12-15.
– $4,087 to Lee Electric, Inc. for a new Trane four-ton heating and cooling unit for Fire Station No. 2. The cost included materials, installation and warranty.

The Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for July 11 at 5:30 p.m.
