Residents of Greenville’s District 3 who want their voice to be heard will have the opportunity to speak out on June 21.

District 3 Councilmember Tommy Ryan is encouraging his constituents to attend a town hall meeting and share their questions and concerns.

“This meeting is all about constituent input,” Ryan said. “I want to give people the chance to come out and have a say in our city’s government. Anybody can call me anytime, but this is chance for them to come out and hopefully get to know me a little better and get to know what my desires and areas of emphasis for the city are.”

This will be the third town hall meeting that Ryan has held since he entered office in 2005.

According to Ryan, the turnout for the previous meetings has been sparse.

“The first time I did this we had two people show up,” Ryan said. “I tried it again a couple of years later and no one showed up. … I hope that this time we have some people show up and take part in the meeting.”

Despite the lack of turnout, Ryan believes it is important to hold the town hall meetings and provide an outlet for the public to share its concerns.

“It gives people a chance to voice their concerns and ask questions,” he said. “In a City Council meeting people have to get permission to be put on the agenda. The environment isn’t quite as open. With these meetings anyone can show up and have their concern heard and ask their questions.”

The meeting will be held at Fire Station No. 2 located on the Greenville Bypass across from Alabama Power Company. The previous meetings were held at the Greenville Housing Authority.

“The fire station is in my district, and it’s also a little more of a high-traffic area,” Ryan said. “I’m hoping that will encourage more people to stop by.”

The meeting is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
