Some upgrades to Vickery Road and the Butler Estates housing development could be in the works if a CDBG application submitted by the Butler County Road Department is approved.

County Engineer Dennis McCall reported at Monday’s County Commission meeting his department had worked with grant writers from the South Central Alabama Development Commission (SCADA) to re-submit an application for improvements to both Vickery Road and Butler Estates.

“We are looking at paving 1.2 miles of Vickery Road and upgrading water for improved fire protection along with re-doing certain roads in Butler Estates,” McCall said.

McCall said representatives will be out this week doing income surveys of residents in these areas.

The county engineer gave a reminder the last of the tree removals from the April storms should be taking place this week.

“Any citizens who have storm-related debris should bring it to the right-of-way,” he said.

Business conducted at Monday’s meeting included:

*Passage of a resolution honoring the newly retired Robert “Bob” Luman for his years of service as the county’s EMA director.  Luman was on hand to receive a copy of the resolution read by Commission Chair Jesse McWilliams, who lauded Luman for his work as both a part-time and full-time director.

“For years Bob worked part time in this position for very little compensation,” said McCall. “There was a lot of behind-the-scenes work he did to find funding for this program.”

*Approval of lease agreement with the City of Greenville to use Greenville Police Dept. building for Voting Precinct District 2.

*Approval of the county’s participation in the 2011 Sales Tax Holiday Aug. 5-7.
