Up & Down Commerce Street – Feb. 12

The Valentine’s Day is upon us. Men gird yourself for spending. Women prepare for wooing.

Alas, poor Lohan. We knew her well. Apparently, the femme fatale of Hollywood swiped a $2,500 necklace. The Mean Girl has been on a widening downward spiral for some time now, checking in and out of rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse. We wonder if the judge will throw the book at her this time. Whether he does or not, she’s already done more than enough damage to herself on a trio of levels – physically, mentally, and reputationally.

The Monroe County Humane Society extends a special invitation to neighbors here in Butler to a one-day animal issue seminar at Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville.

Sarah Dyess, MCHS president, sent as a nice letter asking us to get the word out. We’re getting the word out.

Deadline for registration is Feb. 18. Cost of the seminar is $25 for single folks or $100 for an agency. The fee is waived for members of the Alabama Humane Federation, (there’s still a $10 charge for food per person).

The seminar is Feb. 25.

We have an iPhone and you’re probably familiar with the Apple’s catchphrase, “There’s an app for that.” So what’s an app? Apps (short for Applications) are ingenious bits of software that allow you to perform a variety of different tasks on your phone. For example: the Weather Channel app allows access to detailed weather information; the USA Today app offers content from the nationwide newspaper in digest format; the Guitar Toolkit app turns the phone into a built-in tuner and includes chords and chord variations. There are literally thousands upon thousands of apps (some free, some pricey). So when the commercial states, “there’s an app for that,” there is – in all likelihood – an app for that.

Well, except an app that turns your iPhone into a futuristic laser gun. Or an app that makes you invisible. Or a Genie app that grants you an endless amount of three wishes.

Those, we think, would be really cool.

We’re not going to make fun of Christina Aguilera. Even though she was a total embarrassment.
