“To me, he’s one of the most dedicated assistant coaches that I have ever worked with,” Brown said. “I tell everyone that at McKenzie, we don’t have one head coach, we have two. He’s one of those assistants that doesn’t have to be asked to do something, he just finds something and does it on his own.

Brown said that Powell has excelled at McKenzie, on and off the field.

“On top of helping to improve out sports programs, he’s a great classroom teacher,” Brown said. “He’s really the whole package, always going above and beyond the call of duty.”

Powell said he has enjoyed his time at McKenzie thus far, and is impressed by the support the community has for its school, athletics and education.

He gave all the credit for his accomplishment to his players.

“The kids come out and work extremely hard, and because of their efforts, I was able to be honored with this award,” Powell said. “It has more to do with what our kids did out there on the playing field.”

Powell was given a plaque and ring to commemorate the event.
