Leroy Moorer, 91, passed away on January 11, 20011. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2001 at Butler Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Greenville, Rev. Harold O. Simpson, pastor, Brother James Daniels of Hook Street Church of Christ officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Cemetery with James Herbert Funeral Home directing.

On a windy Wednesday morning on the 27th day of March in 1919, Leroy was born to the late Henry Moorer and Evalyn Crenshaw Moorer of Butler County in Greenville. The sixth born of seven children in total, Leroy grew up with three older brothers, Earnest, Maron and David, and two older sisters, Arwilla and Icie and one younger sister, Essie Mae. The family business was farming sugar cane that was known as Moorer’s Bottom. After school you would find his older siblings working in the field, but not Leroy; he could be heard running in the fields with little sister Essie in tow.

In school his favorite subject was mathematics. He loved working with his hands, but not farming. Leroy was a natural-born builder and enjoyed designing structures; building or repairing homes became his occupation. Self-employed, Leroy built several residential and commercial buildings, and became known for his innovative style.
