The memory of slain Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be remembered on Monday at Dunbar Recreation Center.

A time to commemorate and to celebrate is coming on Monday, January 17. The Butler County Civic League is once again hosting its Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast at Dunbar Recreation Center. The event starts at 8 a.m. with a full southern-style breakfast, to be served by area volunteers, including the Greenville High School JROTC.

Keynote speaker for the memorial breakfast will be Butler County School Superintendent Darren Douthitt. The Ohatchee native has served as superintendent since spring 2010, serving previously as assistant superintendent of the Lee County School System in Opelika, principal of Talladega High School, and Chief Administrative Officer for Carver High School, as well as stints as principal and instructor in Anniston, Pell City and Birmingham.

“This breakfast has been a tradition for a number of years, and we proud to see it continue,” said Dorothy Berry of the BCCL.
