50 years ago: Bass are still biting for Harold R. Wood. He used shiners and caught this fine string of fish in Gaston’s Pond in Lowndes County.  The eight fish weighed 18 ½ pounds and were as pretty a string of fish as you will ever hope to see . . . after the Jaycee Shopping Tour Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Sidney Taylor helped serve candy, cookies, Cokes and ice cream to the youngsters and their parents . . . gift wrapping was included as part of the tour. Mrs. James Dunklin and Mrs. Calvin Steindorff wrapped the gifts the children bought for their parents and other relatives . . . Ted Tindal was the Greenville FFA Tractor Driving winner at the FFA Field Day sponsored by the Soil Conservation Club . . . Greenville’s Dairy Judging Team, Ray Nichols, Curtis Raybon and Joe Stringer, won their contest . . . Mrs. Bill Ryan, Mrs. Lewis Haygood Jr. and Mrs. Edwin Haygood won prizes at the December meeting of the Pride of Greenville Garden Club for their lovely Christmas arrangements . . . carolers from First Baptist Church—Mary Evelyn Cook, Bess McBride, Barbara Bolen, Mary Elizabeth Brown, Dot Miller, Kay Byrd, Karen Kennedy, Laura Cheatham and Claire Till—trolled the ancient Yuletide carols . . .

25 years ago: Visions of the true spirit of Christmas float over the waters of a pond on the property of James Reeves on Highway 10 W. The scene, which has been suspended just over the surface of the water, has been the cause of many a curious glance and slowed automobile during the past week . . . Cub Scout Pack 45 members Alan Ingram, Michael Smith, Donald Lewis, Steven Walker and David Patterson put the finishing touches on a Christmas tree they decorated for the Greenville Nursing Home. The Cub Scouts also brought fruit baskets for the residents . . . Charles Jones, longtime member of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, was honored for his selfless devotion and service for the past decade. Making the presentation is Chamber president Paul Mitchell . . . Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Boutwell of Forest Home brought an oversized specimen of a collard plant by The Advocate offices last week, a cabbage collard, tipping the scales at nearly 15 pounds.

10 years ago: The Greenville Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 39, represented by Trooper James Moorer, president, Lt. Travis Waters, secretary-treasurer and Lt. Mark Harold, vice-president, made a significant contribution to Joe Bush, director of DHR for the Department of Human Resources Community Christmas Program . . . Fred Mack makes a shot as Michael Frost and Brandon Burnett get in place for the rebound, during the Greenville Middle School game against visiting Prattville, with GMS winning 31-24 . . . Becky Coon and Laura Fuller of the Sasanqua Garden Club are on the lookout for homes and businesses in the Greenville area to honor for their beautification efforts . . . Award-winning professional photographer Billy Turner, a native of Georgiana, is busy photographing historical places to preserve for posterity before weather, time and the elements destroy them . . . the Butler County Sheriff’s Reserve and Auxiliary will host the 2nd annual “Miss Deputy” Pageant at McKenzie School Dec. 16, 2000 . . . a total of 101 attended the Farm-City Banquet at Beeland Park YMCA in Greenville . . . October’s Teac her of the Month for Greenville Elementary School was Stephanie Pierce, 3rd grade, a four-year veteran of the classroom.
