The City of Georgiana has received its grant for a new water tower, Mayor Mike Middleton announced during the city council meeting on Tuesday.

“The legislature approved a $400,000 grant for this project. Now our water board has to meet and figure out where to come up with the rest of the funding to proceed with that,” Middleton said.

The mayor said a new water tower should improve water pressure issues for a number of customers.

According to Middleton, grant monies are also in place and work has begun on the treatment plant.

The council also approved a new 15-year cable franchise agreement with Bright House Networks  Bright House has been serving the community for the past 15 years.

In other business, the council voted to approve the FY 2010 Audit and to approve transfer of alcohol license from ZTEC 413 to SHRUSHTI, INC. (the same family under a different name).

The mayor also announced he and the council members will be driving through the city’s trailer parks to see if owners have brought the facilities up to code.

“They’ve been sent letters and are aware of this and know if they aren’t meeting the regulations, they will not be issued business licenses for the coming year,” Middleton said.

In the mayor’s closing comments, Mayor Mike Middleton commended the community for the large turnout for the city’s annual tree-lighting ceremony, calling it “a great way to get everybody in the Christmas spirit.”

“We also had a really good crowd for the parade, which I think was as good a parade as any we have had,” the mayor added.
