Up & Down Commerce St. – Dec. 4

Thursday night, 9:30 p.m., and watching Andy Griffith. We’ve seen this episode a thousand times, if not more. Gomer has been kicked out of the filling station because he’s more talk than action and Andy makes the mistake of inviting him back to Casa de Taylor. There’s the shot of Andy smoking in bed while Gomer belts out a chorus off-screen well past bedtime. So simple a time that smoking had not yet become the perceived plague it’s evolved into today. A simple time and a simple show. But yet so genius.

Recommended for the book lover in your life this Christmas season: the trilogy of novels scribed by the late Stieg Larson, a Swedish journalist and author, who died in 2004. The books – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest – are excellent mystery thrillers. They lose nothing in translation from Swedish to English. Wal-Mart has copies. Or download them to your Kindle.

Well-deserved congratulations to Bryant Vincent and his Spanish Fort Toros who claimed the state 5A title on Thursday night with a 14-0 win over Briarwood Christian. Vincent, of course, coached Greenville High School in 2006 before moving south. We knew Coach Vincent when he was offensive coordinator for Coach Hugh Fountain’s Charles Henderson Trojans earlier in his career. Vincent – and his wife, Holli Pritchett of McKenzie, are expecting their third child next year.

We’ve pulled the heaters from the storage shed. This week was chilly. Next week will be chillier. An arctic blast is headed for Greenville. Expect a cold, cold night for next week’s Christmas festivities in the Camellia City.

The new issue of Camellia Magazine hit the shelves on Friday. A plethora (we’ve always loved that word) of content. Houses, decorative ideas, a dog whisperer, a blacksmith, a daytrip, and a lasting impression.
Pick up a copy around town or swing by our offices. We’ll even sign it for you.
And be sure to support the advertisers inside. They’re the reason Camellia is complimentary. The best things in life, after all, should be free.

We honestly believe if we followed all of the Dr. Oz’s advice each night post-Andy Griffith our health would be impeccable.

According to our sources, Fort Dale’s football players were fitted for their championship rings this week.

Rumor: Golden Corral is coming back to Greenville. Fact: the building that was supposed to house that Golden Corral was peeled to the ground last week. Apparently it will be replaced by an O’Reilly Auto Parts.
Or – as we had the sales staff in this office going a few months ago – a restaurant called “Fish-heads.” And that’s all that would be sold there. You would go in, pick out your fresh fish-head of choice, and have it wrapped to take home for dinner.
Eat them up, yum.
