An early-morning stroke of inspiration from Above helped Luverne’s Scott Fowler earn second place in a singer-songwriter competition in Weogufka recently.

The journey began in August, when a preliminary competition fell on an opportune date.

“A friend from Alexander City recommended it, and the date was open,” said Fowler, who spends much of his time performing across the Southeast. “The Lord opens doors, because I was already booked until next September.”

Fowler took three songs to the competition, which was open to all genres of music, and performed each of them.

The judges chose “Trust and Believe” as the winning song.

“I wrote that song around the first of this year,” Fowler said. “I woke up on a Sunday morning and couldn’t sleep, so I wrote it in about 10 minutes. After I finished, I just had a sense of peace and went back to sleep.”

The song is a gospel song, and Fowler said it’s about how simple it is to have salvation.

“All you have to do is trust and believe,” he said. “It’s that easy. I’ve found that sometimes the best songs just come to you.”

Following the preliminary competition, Fowler performed at the finals in Weogufka, where he competed against 12 other people for the crown.

“There were three judges, including a guy who has written songs for Garth Brooks,” Fowler said.
Troy Jones, a songwriter from Sylacauga who has had hits like “Shift Work” for Kenny Chesney and “People are Crazy” for Billy Currington, also performed at the competition.

“Trust and Believe” placed second, with the top spot going to Chris Warren, who has performed in Branson, Mo.

“The judges stayed out for a long time while they deliberated, so it was a good, close competition,” Fowler said.

While Fowler’s winning song is gospel, he wasn’t always a gospel artist.

Fowler came to know the Lord in 2005 at the annual Swamp Supper in Glenwood and cleaned his life up.

“I played country for years,” he said. “Now what we do is about the Lord.”

Scott and his wife, Peggy, formed the Fowler Family Music Ministry.

“She speaks, and I sing,” he said.

Occasionally, Peggy even gets in on the songwriting.

“Every so often he’ll say, ‘Help!’ and I’ll do what I can,” Peggy laughed.

The pair’s music is also available on the local airwaves.

“People can also call 100.3 in Luverne and 94.7 in Troy and request some of our songs,” Scott said.
