Crenshaw Christian’s undefeated season came to a halt Friday night with a 20-14 loss to Jackson Academy in the first round of the playoffs.

The Cougars led 7-6 at halftime after Justin Fuller intercepted a pass and took it eight yards to the endzone for a touchdown with 6:37 to go before halftime.

The Eagles took the ensuing drive and scored with 3:13 left.

CCA’s second touchdown came midway through the third quarter when Pete King connected with Cameron Johnson for a 25-yard pass to make it 14-6.

Once again, Jackson responded with a 50-yard pass and two-point conversion to knot the score at 14.

The Eagles capitalized on a CCA miscue near the start of the fourth quarter.

After recovering a Cougar fumble at their own 40-yard line, the Eagles put the final score of the game on the board with a three-yard run.

CCA made two drives deep into Eagle territory in the fourth quarter, but a fumble and a turnover on downs killed the scoring chances.

“We just weren’t mentally prepared,” said head coach Roland Jones. “Their record was deceiving, and we also made mistakes like putting it on the ground.”

“That’s the playoffs, though — everyone is good,” he continued. “Our youth showed during this game, and we’ve got to learn from it and get up and go again.”

The Cougars had 178 yards rushing, led by 80 yards from Will Moses.

Jud Sutley led the team with 10 tackles, Rann Smyth had eight tackles and an assist, and Moses also added eight tackles.

The loss ends the Cougars’ season with a 10-1 record.
