Eating on the ‘lighter side’

Tastes great...and filling!

Some days you just don’t want a burger, sandwich or a “sit-down” meal for lunch.

Sometimes, you just get a hankering for-a salad. Something light and still filling enough to tide you over until suppertime.

Today, needing to do some surfing on my laptop during lunch hour and in the mood for such a salad, I went through the drive-thru at Arby’s and ordered one of their Farmhouse Salads.

They offer several options: crispy chicken, grilled chicken or ham and turkey.

I opted for the latter along with an iced sweet tea.

Arriving back at the office, I discovered a colorful meal: pieces of ham and turkey, chunks of tomatoes, a few onion slices (easy to pick out if you are worried about “onion breath”), shredded Cheddar cheese and crumbled bacon bits (yes, the real thing) on a bed of crisp salad greens.

Arby’s offers several different kinds of dressing, and I chose my favorite, buttermilk ranch, which was supplied in a generous-sized pouch, along with a knife and fork. However, the knife was not necessary, as everything had been cut into bite-sized portions.

The salad was fresh, tasty and hit the spot. If you’re counting calories, the bacon pieces and cheese (and the dressing) probably won’t pass muster.

However, it did prove a filling lunch still light on the stomach and kind to the wallet.

Of course Arby’s has salads. What fast food place doesn’t these days? But if you absolutely crave the kind of roast beef sandwich that Arby’s made famous, grab the beef and cheddar version. Succulent and extremely satisfying.
