A weapon found on campus at Luverne High School led to a lockdown of the school earlier today.

Superintendent of Education Kathi Wallace released a statement to The Luverne Journal confirming that a weapon was found on school grounds, but that it was not in anyone’s possession.

“In abundance of caution, the administration locked down the high school and contacted the authorities,” Wallace stated. “The authorities conducted a thorough search and no additional weapons were found.  The weapon was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office for identification.”

Early Tuesday afternoon, LHS principal Chuck Alford issued a similar statement to parents through the school’s automated announcement calling system.

The first call about the weapon was placed to the Luverne Police Department at 10:54 a.m., and the alert that the school was on lockdown was placed at 11:02 a.m.

Both the Luverne Police Department and the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Department responded, with deputies being notified at 11:24 a.m.

As of 2:30 p.m., Chief Deputy Jimmy Lecroy said that more information about the weapon was not available because the Sheriff’s Department had not yet taken possession of the weapon.

More information will be posted as the story develops.
