Shepherd reports on award-winning garden club year

Suzy Shepherd, GCA District VI director and president of the Georgiana Garden Club attended the Garden Clubs of Alabama summer meeting Wednesday, August 4 at Arrowhead Country Club. Shepherd reported on the work done within her district during the past club year.

“I am so proud of our clubs for putting their hard garden club work into books of evidence and winning awards,” Shepherd said.

“Yaupon, Georgiana, Luverne, Montgomery Federation and Fleur de Lis, Camden, won a total of 31 state awards, with District VI winning two awards. We had 11 clubs out of 21 who applied for Club of Distinction and nine of thse were classified Gold Seal. Georgiana, Yaupon and Luverne took nine Deep South Awards, with nine state-level Youth Contest winners and four Deep South.” The district gave two $500 grants to St. Fiacre and Down to Earth for club projects, and donated $350 for a veterans’ marker to be placed at the rest area in Wetumpka.

The clubs hold raffles to help fund projects such as monetary prizes for the state winners in their youth contests.

The Georgiana club is currently selling raffle tickets for a glass bird bath from Kirkland’s, valued at $70.

“We want to invite everyone to join us in Greenville for our fall meeting on October 27 at beautiful Cambrian Ridge. Coffee and refreshments start at 9 a.m. with the meeting at 10 a.m. The Georgiana, Sasanqua, Pride of Greenville and Sprig N’ Twig clubs will all be hosting the event,” Shepherd said.

As chairman for “Every Light a Prayer for Peace,” Shepherd also encouraged everyone in attendance to be part of the Club Members’ Tea at the State Capitol Archives Room and the tree-lighting ceremony to follow on the Capitol steps in December.
