Illegal dump sites continue to be a problem for the Crenshaw County Commission, who addressed the problem at Monday’s meeting.

One of the latest violations the commission has found was at the river bridge in Glenwood.

“Someone cut back a bunch of privet and dumped it there in the parking area,” said commissioner Ed Beasley. “I went out there with Johnny Hollis, but we couldn’t find anything to identify anyone who might have dumped it.”

The commission voted to remove any plastic or other materials from the site and then burn the rest.

Commission chairman Ronnie Hudson talked about working with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to get such sites cleaned up.

“When we had someone with ADEM come and talk with us a few months ago, he told us that first of all, you send a letter to the landowner, who must state that the trash isn’t his,” Hudson said. “From there, it goes to the cleanup side, and the site goes into a lottery according to how funding is. It’s a pretty good thing, and it helps get some of these sites cleaned up.”

Commissioner Ricky McElwain said that he also reported two illegal dump sites last week.

Beasley said he hopes that public awareness will help cut down on the issue.

“We really want to encourage the public to keep an eye out for people who are causing the problem,” he said.

In other business, the commission discussed the ongoing FEMA repair sites.

“We don’t have any news on the FEMA money yet,” said county engineer Benjie Sanders, who added that the bill was still stuck in Congress.

Of the 125 total sites, 73 have been completed and 37 are in progress.

The only sites remaining to be repaired are: Ollie B. Road, Swanner Bridge Road, Golden Road, Hughes Road, McLeod Road, Lantern Branch Road, Helen Road, Blackmon Road, Barfield Road, Rockdale Road, Ruff Road, Sexton Bridge Road, Club Pond Road, Jackson Road and Quail Tower Road.

“These projects are moving along pretty well,” Sanders said.
