The subjects of solids, gases and liquids had never been so entertaining until Tiffany Bishop and the McWane Center of Birmingham came to town.

Bishop brought “The Wonders of Water” to approximately 75 children and adults on Friday afternoon at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library.

From learning the amazing qualities of liquid nitrogen and how to create “dragon breath” with nitrogen-soaked crackers, to how to make mini-rockets from Alka-Seltzer and film canisters, youngsters from preschool through early adolescence were spellbound by Bishop’s lively and informative program.

Moving the action outdoors, Bishop even showed off the famous as-seen-on “Mythbusters” trick, using Mentos candies and a Diet Coke to create a small geyser in front of the library (kids, don’t try this at home without parental supervision).

“The McWane Center has done a number of presentations with us over the years, and they have always done a great job for us. She had those kids – and the adults – in the palm of her hand,” said head librarian Burke McFerrin.

The program was the grand finale of the Summer Reading Program – “Make a Splash.”

An average of 65 students a week participated in the three summer sessions, the biggest number ever, said children’s librarian Jean Bauer.
