Greenville High School battled through a 100-degree day to win all four games of the 7-on-7 passing camp the school hosted on Wednesday. Opelika, Lee-Montgomery, St. Paul and and Beauregard also participated.

The Tigers competed in four camps over the summer in preparation for fall practice which starts in August. The passing camps have been especially beneficial for sophomore quarterback Kent Riley and the wide receivers, said head coach Ben Blackmon.

“With Kent, a big part of his game is running the ball,” said Blackmon. “The camps have forced him to become a passer, to read defenses and make good decisions.”

Riley takes over for three-year starter Ryan Smith. The Tigers also lost one of their top receivers in Mikwese Claybourne.

“Each year we always lose a quality group of receivers,” said Blackmon. “But Coach (Joey) Hamilton does a great job with that. He always finds somebody to step up. This year, Michael Watts, Darius Watson, Fernandez Grey, and Tijuan Rudolph have all stepped up and worked hard this year.”

The Tigers’ JV team was also able to work in some camps this summer as well, said Blackmon.

The team of ninth graders got some practice in against Georgiana and Luverne’s varsity teams, he said.

Parents meeting: Blackmon said there will be a football players’ parents meeting at 6 p.m. at the school’s athletic facility on Monday night.
