There’s still repair work that needs to be done at the new school facilities in the county. Administrative assistant Allin Whittle presented the latest findings to the Board of Education at the July meeting.

“The principals at W.O. Parmer and the former Butler County Magnet School (Georgiana School) regenerated lists of items that needed attention and we could not close with the arbitration representative because of these,” Whittle said.

At W.O. Parmer, problems such as water emitting a rotten egg smell, leaks above the cafeteria, a cracked commode, and incomplete tile work were cited.

“Some of these problems have been fixed. The major things have been the leaks and surface of the road out front . . . the city has concerns about accepting the road in that condition,” Whittle said.

At Georgiana School, design flaws by the architects were still causing problems, Whittle said.

“We still have water running in under the doors when it rains and that has to be addressed. Some other issues like tiles have been resolved, but there are still a few problems left to resolve,” he said.

Whittle also reported the name change had formally taken place on the school in Georgiana, showing photos of the new name “Georgiana School” on the front of the building. Workers were also in the process of putting up the letters naming the school’s gym the “Robert L. Austin Gymnasium.”

Whittle also announced a total of $72,101.39 had been raised through the sale of surplus property. He said additional items would be posted at gov.deals to be bid upon following the board’s approval Thursday night to declare it surplus property.

The Butler County BOE also approved the following at their regular July meeting:

– Renewal of AASB membership for $8,444

– Renewal of NASB membership for $4,425

– Maintenance of minimum amount necessary for a one-month reserve as required by the State Department for the General Fund balance

– Advertisement for bids for serving line at the Greenville Middle School’s Child Nutrition Program

Revisions to the proposed Student Handbook and Code of Conduct. The possible addition of sweatshirts in school colors to the uniform code was also discussed.

A special called meeting of the Butler County BOE has been set for 10 a.m. Thursday, July 29 at the Central Office Boardroom.
