The Farmers Market Association is requesting $7,000 from the Butler County Commission to offset the costs of construction of the organization’s new building on Cedar St. and N. Conecuh St.

Richard Branum, of the FMA, requested the funds during the commission’s Thursday workshop. The building, which measures 40-foot by 60-foot, cost just under $30,000 to construct, said Branum. The number of vendors have steadily grown, as well, said Branum, from an initial three vendors on the market’s opening day mid-June to a total of nine on Thursday.

“Everyone seems happy,” he said. “No complaints.”

Commission Chairman Jesse McWilliams said the Farmers Market is a “good thing” for Butler County and saw no reason the commission couldn’t honor Branum’s request on Monday. The commission meets at 8:30 a.m. for its regular July meeting.

Also on Monday, the commission will field budget requests from the various county departments as well as appropriation requests.
