The Georgiana Garden Club held their last meeting of the club year on May 6 at the lovely rustic home of member Annette Tunnell. Sylvia Taylor provided the devotional for the day. Following a tour of the home, the nine members present enjoyed a covered dish luncheon.

President Suzy Shepherd announced she was very pleased with the success of the club’s year.

“Everyone has worked hard, and it has paid off,” Shepherd said.

Shepherd told the club she had brought back 13 State-level awards and four Deep South-level awards for the GCC. The club also won a National Garden Club Certificate of Appreciation of award participation. Carrington Cole, a 7th grader at Trinity School took second place in the NGC Youth Poetry Contest while Kristen Terry, a ninth grader at McKenzie School, received a Certificate of Commendation.

“I hope even more students will enter these contests next year,” said Shepherd.

She encouraged contest chairs to meet with teachers before school re-opens and give them a copy of 2010-2011 NGC themes. This year’s theme for the high school essay (grades 9-12) is “The Environment: Our Personal Responsibility,” and for the poetry contest (grades 7-9), “Fields of Daffodils.”

The Garden Therapy project for the month was teaching youth how to dry and preserve plant materials.

Door prizes were won by Sylvia Taylor and Wanda Williams. Meetings will resume in September.
