The Greenville All-Stars battled back from the loser’s bracket this weekend for a rematch against Opp in the championship game of the Dixie Darlings sub-district tournament on Monday.

Opp beat Greenville 15-0 on Friday, but the host team won two consecutive games on Saturday – beating Zion Chapel 19-0 and Elba 11-0 – to make the tournament final.

Monday’s game was much closer, but Opp advanced with a 7-4 win.

Greenville earned the runner-up trophy.

Greenville’s Tankeya Smith ripped a two RBI double in the first inning to put her team up 2-0, but Opp scored three runs in the second to take the lead. Emma Jo Thomas tied the game 3-3 with on a fielder’s choice hit in Greenville’s half of the second.

Opp added another run in the third inning, but the damage could have been much worse had first baseman Shelby Vickery not knocked down a line drive, recovered well enough to find the ball on the ground and stepped on first to record the third out with two Opp runners left on.

Greenville’s defense rose to the occasion again in the fourth. Anna Blake Langford turned a double play at first to hold Opp to one run.

Greenville tried to answer as Vickery led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and came home on a hit by Smith. Greenville held Opp scoreless in the final inning, but was unable to generate any offense in its final at-bat.

Langford, Kami Gandy, and Kayla Motley also added hits for the Greenville Darlings.

Greenville’s Angels All-Star team didn’t fare as well this weekend at the sub-district tournament, also held in Greenville.

Greenville was blanked by Opp 11-0, then lost to Zion Chapel 17-3 in the second game on Saturday.
