Greenville’s Dixie Boys all-star team opens against Crenshaw County in Troy in the sub-district tournament on Friday. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Troy’s Franklin Park.

“I feel real good about the team,” said head coach Mary Whigham. “We’ve got a couple of weak areas we’re working on, but these are boys who want to play ball. They come out to practice ready to work.”

Members of this year’s team are: EJ Brasington, Tim Gorum, Anthony Dunbar, Devonta Posey, Jeffrey Fuller, Daminous Andrews, Chris Cobb, Caleb Whigham, Michael Smith Jr., and Michael Phillips.

Whigham said Hartley, Cobb, and Fuller will form the core of the team’s pitching rotation.

“Nick and Christopher are really good pitchers and so is Jeffery,” said Whigham. “We’ve got as many as five who’ll pitch. Hitting-wise, we’re pretty solid. All the boys hit the ball pretty good.”

Whigham said the main thing for the team is to have unity.

“This is a team and that’s what I told them,” said Whigham. “I said, ‘if we can’t work together then we can’t play together.’ They all were good with that.”

The sub-district tournament is double-elimination. Troy and Enterprise are the other two teams.

Award winners from the city’s Dixie Boys league season were: Ben Pressley (MVP Braves), Will Petty (Sportsmanship Braves); Chase Whiddon (MVP Rangers), Dillon Brown (Sportsmanship Rangers); Jacob Phillips (MVP Red Sox), Tristan Stinson (Sportsmanship Red Sox).
