Lillie M. Brooks

Lillie M. Brooks, 76, of 291 Third St. S.W., Warren, Ohio, died Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 28, 1934 in Luverne, Ala., a daughter of John R. Sr. and Bernice Parks Jackson.

Lillie was a retired secretary for the Warren City Schools and was a member of Grace A.M.E. Zion Church.

Survivors include a son, Henry C. of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Denise M. Pope of Westerville and Chandra L. Brooks of Warren; two brothers, Willie Joe Jackson of Warren and John R. Jackson, Jr. of Luverne; three sisters, Minnie Walker and Retha Thompson of Warren and Mary Muriel Bogan of Luverne; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred “Zip” Brooks, and three brothers.

A service of Christian burial was held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 27 at Grace A.M.E. Church, and friends called from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. An Eastern service was held at 7 p.m.

Burial followed at Oakwood Cemetery.

Sibley-Murray-Ferebee handled the arrangements.

James Anderson Duncan

DUNCAN, Mr. James Anderson, 69, a resident of Brantley died Monday June 7, 2010. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Wednesday June 9, 2010 at the Brantley Baptist Church with Rev. Tia Compton and Rev. Mitch Mares officiating.

Interment followed in Providence Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mr. Duncan is preceded in death by a son, Dave A. Duncan; his father, George A. Duncan; and his mother, Mattie Oglesby Gibson.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary Olene Horn Duncan; three children, Johnny (Angelia) Duncan, Amanda Duncan ( Kenneth Rawlinson) and Tiffany Stevens; one daughter-in-law, Melissa Brown Duncan; eight grandchildren, Marley Duncan, Mia Clark, Deyland “Bubba” Clark, Jaymie “J.J.” Duncan, Chloe “ Clo Clo” Duncan, Beckah Duncan, Kendale “ Little Man” Duncan and Kenneth “ Big Man “ Duncan; sister, Willie Ann Golden; and three brothers, Billy Gibson, Tommy Gibson and Paul Gibson.

Active pallbearers were Henry Durden, Kenneth Rawlinson, Lamar Chandler, Danny Killingsworth, Randell Glober and Derek Hughes.

Douglas D. Mitchell

MITCHELL, Douglas D., 84,a resident of Brantley, died Thursday, June 3, 2010.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 11 am from the Brantley Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Abbott, Rev. Mitch Mares and Rev. Travis Johnson officiating.

Interment followed with military honors in Brantley Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife of 65 years, Willie Pearl Mitchell; two children, Lydia Mitchell (Jim) McNeal and Elton D. (Mary) Mitchell; four grandchildren, Tiffany (Lonnie) Worthington, Monica (John) Kopin, Brent D. (Hanna) Mitchell and Andrew McNeal; six great grandchildren; and his sister Frances Mae Cornett. Active pallbearers were Stanton Cornett, Buddy Cornett, Jessie Murph, Kenny Mitchell, Edwin Mitchell and Pete Newton .

James Mitchell and the Deacons of Brantley Baptist Church served as honorary pallbearers.

Jimmy Lee Olive

Jimmy Lee Olive died on Monday, June 7, 2010 at Crenshaw Community Hospital.

He was 79 years old.

He leaves six children to cherish his memory: Yvonne Brooks of Montgomery, Mary Jean Harrell of Clarksville, Tenn., Willie Davis of Luverne, Nellie Harris of Luverne, Belinda McCreary of Luverne and Michael Olive of San Diego, Calif.

He will be funeralized on Saturday, June 12 at 2 p.m. at Woodford Avenue Community Church with the Rev. Lionel Davis, pastor.

Final rites are entrusted to Luverne Mortuary. For more information, call 335-3360.

Glenn Boyd Handley

HANDLEY, Mr. Glenn Boyd, Sr., 86, a resident of Luverne died Monday June 14, 2010.

Funeral services were held at 11 am Wednesday June 16, 2010 at the Luverne First Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie Burns and Rev. William Leverette officiating. Interment followed in the Luverne Emmaus Cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mr. Handley is preceded in death by a son, William Nix Handley; parents, W.B. and Lucille Handley; his sister, Katherine Handley Jamison; and a brother, W.T. Handley.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Hawkins Handley; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn Boyd and Carey Handley, Jr.; two grandchildren, Bedford Nix Handley and Caytlin Cydnie Handley. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any memorial donations be made to the Luverne First Baptist Church, the Emmaus Cemetery Fund or Crenshaw Christian Academy.

Beulah Ross Hall

HALL, Mrs. Beulah Ross Folmar, 95, a resident of Glenwood died Thursday June 10, 2010 in the Crenshaw Community Hospital.

Mrs. Hall was born on October 19, 1914 to Thomas Vining and Hulon Stinson Folmar of Goshen.

Funeral services were held at 1pm Sunday June 13, 2010 at the Elam Primative Baptist Church with Rev. James R. Hall and Rev. Clarence Crowe officiating.

Interment followed in the church cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband, James Forney Hall; her daughter, Yvonne True; a son, James Donald Hall; and two brothers, Earl Folmar and Thomas Lee Folmar.

Survivors include two children, Elaine Hall (Dewey) Smith and Thomas Franklin (Jimmie Lila) Hall; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.

Johnnie Ruth Phillips Broderway

Phillips, Mrs. Johnnie Ruth Broderway, 61, a resident of Rutledge died Saturday June 12, 2010.

Graveside services will be 2 pm Tuesday June 15, 2010 at the Ivy Creek Cemetery with Rev. Ira Walton officiating and Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing.

Mrs. Phillips is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Verbie Stewart Broderway.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Phillips; two step-children, David Phillips and Michelle Jeffcoat; three grandchildren; and a brother, Billy R. Broderway.

Active pallbearers will be Ronald Phillips, David Phillips, Jimmy Phillips, Mike Broderway, Todd Broderway and Jimmy Davis, Jr.
