An audit is currently underway for the Town of McKenzie and so far, “it’s looking good,” said Tina Powell, town clerk.

“There’s just one or two small things that needed our attention. We are awaiting the final report, which should be in soon,” Powell said at Monday’s town council meeting.

According to Powell, updating the audit should improve the town’s prospects for receiving USDA and other grants.

A representative of the USDA was originally scheduled to speak at the June meeting, but postponed his visit until the July meeting.

The councilmembers and mayor discussed the matter of surplus property, which includes two cars, a utility truck and a fire truck.

Powell said she would check with legal counsel on requirements for advertising the surplus vehicles and find out all the options available.

A more pressing matter is the leaking roof of the old fire house, which is being used to store the fire department’s supplies.

With a quantity of tin already available, it was suggested re-roofing should be tackled as soon as possible, or the continued rotting will require much more extensive repair.

Due to the July 4 holiday, the next meeting of the McKenzie Town Council is set for July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall. Normally, the council meets the first Monday of each month.
