When the dust settled after Tuesday night’s election, there were several races decided and several others still up in the air.

Two of the bigger winners were Charles West, who is seeking another term as sheriff, and Randy Wilkes, who was running for Superintendent.

West earned a spot in November’s primary election, while Wilkes faces no opposition in November.

Incumbent Charlie Sankey, Jr. earned the win for County Commission District 5, and Troy Hudson won re-election for Board of Education District 2.

Despite bouts of rain throughout the day, Probate Judge Jim Perdue estimated turnout for the election at around 50 percent.

“Our Republican interest in boxes wasn’t as high as I would have thought, but I think people are still more interested in local elections than the state races,” Perdue said.

Several races will feature a runoff election on July 13, including County Commission Districts 1, 2 and 4.

Nearly all the votes have been counted from the election — the only exception is provisional ballots, and Perdue said he doesn’t expect those to have much effect on the race.

“Based on reports from the polls, we’ll have less than 10 provisional ballots across the county,” he said.
