The county’s top students were honored at the latest meeting of the Butler County Board of Education. Butler County Magnet School’s Shameka Rodgers and Chasity Hope Browder; McKenzie School’s Constance Ward and Marcus Mitchell, and Greenville High School’s Connor Murphy-White and Amanda Monroe were all recognized as their school’s respective valedictorians and salutatorians.

Also recognized was the custodial staff of the Central Office, which took the Clean Campus Award for the month.

Technology director Matthew Shell presented a report for bid results on a new Web filter for the system’s Internet. The board approved Shell’s recommendation to accept a three-year contract with Phantom Technologies and the iBoss at a cost of $10,595.45. Phantom offered the lowest cost and considerable flexibility to the system, while tallying the highest score in cost versus functionality.

The board also approved replacement of windows and HVAC system at Greenville Elementary School for a total cost of $226,681, $19 shy of the $226,700 in grant monies to be used for the project. The system had originally applied for $374,000 in hopes of replacing windows and HVAC systems in both GES and McKenzie School.

-Approved request to extend bread bids (Sara Lee) and milk bids (Dairy Fresh) for one year

-Approved request for permission to conduct summer school-

-Approved request for change in effective date of Georgiana School name change to July 1, 2010

-Approved retirement of Virtiria Gandy, Child Nutrition Program worker, Butler County Magnet School – 18 years

and Charlotte Scott, bus driver, Transportation Department – 12 years

-Approved request for change in June’s regular boarding meeting date to the second Thursday, June 10, due to a conflict in the superintendent’s schedule.
