Students from Butler, Lowndes and Crenshaw County got to try their hand as lawyers, jurors and court reporters Friday.

The mock trial of Jack Jones, of Jack and the Beanstalk, was only one part of the tri-county Law Day.

Ternisha A. Miles, Assistant district attorney for Butler County, said the American Bar and Alabama State Bar associations put on law day programs across the country every May.

“This gives an inside look at how the legal system works on a daily basis,” Miles said.

The program began with presentations by many local attorneys on topics such as closing arguments, courtroom rules and legal procedures.

Miles said the students, many of which watch such television programs as Law and Order, enjoyed the mock trial and the chance to stand in front of a real judge in an authentic courtroom.

Last year, Miles said, they were not able to hold a law day. The three counties, which make up the 2nd Circuit Court district, decided to combine forces to make a program the children will enjoy.

Greenville Middle School, Butler County Magnet, and McKenzie High School represented Butler County Schools at the event. Lowndes County had Hayneville Middle and Lowndes County Middle in attendance. From Crenshaw County, Luverne High, Brantley High and Crenshaw Christian Academy came out for the day’s legal lessons.
