A number of special recognitions were made at the latest meeting of the Butler County Board of Education. The late Jeffery Ray, a teacher at Greenville Middle School and former teacher at R.L Austin in Georgiana, was honored through a memorial plaque accepted by Greenville Elementary School principal Tera Simmons on behalf of his widow, Sharon Ray.

In the memoriam presented by board president Billy Jones and interim superintendent Joseph Dean, Ray, who passed away April 15, was remembered as “a dedicated educator who was respected and admired by his peers . . . whose works shall live long after him in the lives of the many he touched and taught by both precept and example.”

Four Second Chance Program graduates were recognized Thursday night. Audriana Rhodes, Andrea Roper and Travis Wilson all donned their caps and gowns and marched to the strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” to receive their diplomas in front of family and friends. Mandy Seawright was awarded her GED.

Mayor Dexter McLendon and the Southeast Alabama Gas District were also recognized for their award of $8,400 to the county school system.

Dr. Tera Simmons of Greenville Middle School took the Clean Campus Award for the month of April.
