He’s a proud former Marine, a family man and the talented fourth-place finalist in season two of “American Idol.”

His name is Josh Gracin, and he’s coming to Georgiana April 17.

Gracin, a country artist who has charted with hits such as “I Want to Live,” “Nothin’ to Lose,” “Stay With Me (Brass Bed),” and “We Weren’t Crazy,” will be performing that Saturday night as part of Salute-A-Soldier at the Hank Williams Park. The event is being sponsored by the Family Readiness Group of the 781st Transportation National Guard.

During his time on the highly rated Fox television show, the U.S. invasion of Iraq took place, causing Gracin to do some soul-searching. “I felt guilty because I was singing on the show, and there were fellow Marines over there in foxholes,” he recalled.

The former lance corporal with the 1st Maintenance Battalion served as a recruiter for the service following his tenure on AI, making appearances at special events around the country to promote the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in 2004, signing his first record deal that same year.

“We are so excited to have Josh coming to perform for us at Salute-A-Soldier and I know it’s going to be a great show,” said event organizer Tina Little of the FRG.

Gates will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, with Gracin taking the stage at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the gate. Tickets can be purchased at Bates Texaco in Greenville, J & D’s Country Dining in Georgiana and Mr. Henry’s #4 & 5 in Andalusia.

Free admission during the day is offered to families with live music courtesy of New Vision and Night Moves, along with arts and crafts, Air Jumpz inflatables, karaoke, door prizes, concessions and more, Little says.

“Everyone is welcome to come out, bring their lawn chairs, and spend the day with us. Show your support for our military and have a great family day, too,” Little said. Proceeds from the event go to assist the families of local service members deployed overseas.
