A packed agenda and a packed house were the order of the day at Tuesday’s meeting of the Georgiana City Council.

Considerable discussion time was given to the two “Clean Up Days” set aside to spruce up the town and clear away junk, trash and debris.

Saturday, April 10 and Saturday, April 24 are the dates Mayor Mike Middleton will have city employees out with trucks making rounds to pick up trash. The city council members have all been contacting citizens in their district in efforts to organize volunteers for the two days.

Council member Byron Ward said arrangements had also been made for pick up of any scrap metal items on April 10.

“If we have a good amount of items for them to pick up, they said they will be back on April 24,” Ward said.

The public is encouraged to use the opportunity to discard old appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators.

“We’ve had a lot of folks donate items to assist with this cleanup,” Ward said. “A lot of people from out of town have supplied us with surgical gloves, grippers to assist older people in trash cleanup. And our Dollar General has donated garbage bags and bottled water.”

Mayor Middleton said he’d get the bottled water on ice to keep everyone cool that day.

“And remember, if you don’t show up, you will be talked about,” he quipped.

Middleton also reminded those present a memorial tribute to Mary Wallace would be held beginning at 1 p.m. April 10 at the Ga-Ana Theatre and continuing until 7 p.m.

“Mary did a lot for our Hank museum. Many people do not realize just how much time she put in. I encourage you to drop by and pay your respects to her memory,” Middleton said.

He also encouraged those at the meeting to make plans to attend Salute-A-Soldier set for April 17 at Hank Williams Park. “The Family Readiness Group sponsors this and they do a lot to help these soldiers’ families. This is their major fundraiser, so if you’ve got a civic mind, go out there and support it,” Middleton said.

Ward discussed the benefits of the National League of Cities Prescription Drug Plan Card, which the council voted to adopt at no cost to the City. He also spoke on gathering information for the planned City of Georgiana website, and presented a proposed version of the city’s new flag. That flag will be sent to Iraq to fly over the command post where some local troops are stationed, Ward said. The council will vote on a final version next month.

The council approved the following items:

*2010 Sales Tax Holiday (Ordinance 2010-02)

*D&H Products, Inc. invoice #8377 for weed killer in the amount of $1,248.77

*Request by Police Chief James Blackmon to apply to the USDA for grant (80 percent with 20 percent city match) for two police cars. This would allow the department to avoid keeping the same police vehicles on the road 24 hours a day and extend their years of usage, Middleton said.
