Greenville High softball traveled to Andalusia for tournament play Friday. Out of three games played, the Tigers came away with one win over Red Level, 5-4.

“It was a good weekend,” said coach Donna Sunnycalb. “Once again, I don’t think my girls realize how close they are to being really successful.”

Sunnycalb said Hollie Halford, the Tigers third baseman, pulled out some really good defensive plays.

“The big thing for my girls now is the mental element,” Sunycalb said. “Physically, we can compete with anyone. We have the skills, we have the fundamentals and we have the ability to be able to compete, we just mentally fall out of the game.”

Sunnycalb said the Wetumpka match was a game that started good, until her girls lost concentration. GHS was leading 2-1 at the top of the fourth, but lost control of the game, eventually losing 7-2.

In the match against Red Level, however, the Tigers managed to stay focused throughout the game. In the bottom of the fifth, GHS broke the 4-4 tie to take the lead. Cortnee Meyers grabbed the win on the mound.

Meyers hit 2-for-4 against Red Level, picking up a double. Hollie Halford went 2-for-3 and Marvia Scott went 2-for-4.

“I am hoping we are going to peak at the right time,” Sunnycalb said. “We need to bare down and start executing more.”

Defensively, this means not giving up a base hit after an 0-2 count or walking lead-off batters, Sunnycalb said.

“At the plate, we have to be more aggressive,” Sunnycalb said. “Sometimes I think we are waiting for a walk instead wanting a hit.”

The Tigers face Wilcox-Central at home Tuesday. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
