While most Fort Dale students were enjoying their spring break on Thursday, their baseball team was taking batting practice and preparing for the night’s game.

The Eagles faced off against Edgewood in the first match over the break, losing 3-1 in the Thursday night game.

Coach Josh Beverley said it was a disappointing loss.

“Todd Burkett threw a great game,” Beverley said. “He struck out eight and walked one-he really didn’t deserve to lose.”

FDA had some difficulty getting the bats going.

John Scott batted 2 for 3, Skylar McKeown 2 for 3 and Todd Burkett 1 for 3. These would be the only 5 hits the Eagles got the whole night.

Beverley said Edgewood’s pitcher had a good pick-off move that caught a few of his base runners during the game. Advancing base runners, Beverley said, was a problem during the game.

“They hit when they got someone on,” Beverley said. “We’d get a double, and just leave a man out there on second.”

Despite the outcome, Beverley said it was just good to get back after a few days off and play a good team.

The second day’s competition put up less of a fight.

The Eagles played Eastwood Academy, a Christian school that is not currently part of AISA.

“They are thinking about joining the association eventually,” Beverley said. “They are still in the beginnings of their program.”

The game ended after 5 innings due to the mercy rule with FDA ahead, 16-2.

Skylar McKeown hit 2 for 6, with a grand slam and solo home run helping him grab 6 RBIs. Brandon Matthews went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and Steven Till went 2 for 2.

McKeown pitched 3 innings and was awarded the win.

Beverley said his team is getting ready for some tough games ahead. The outcome of the next three games versus Macon East, Lee Scott and Pike will decide which teams from their area advance.

The Eagles play Macon East tomorrow night at home, starting at 4 p.m.
