Butler County Magnet School picked up its second win of the season with a 13-8 win over McKenzie this week.

The Panthers now are 2-10 on the season headed into this weekend’s tournament in Florala. More importantly, the Panthers are 1-1 in the area which means playoff hopes are still alive, said head coach Shane Smothers.

“The kids have worked hard and it was good to see good things happen,” said Smothers.

BCMS was down 6-2 to the Tigers after two innings, but scored four runs in the third led by a Lajordan Crittenden RBI triple, then took the lead for good with a five-run fourth inning. Jim Grayson drove in a pair of runners with a double and the Panthers led 9-6.

“When we were down I just told them to keep fighting,” said Smothers. “We were able to climb back in it and take control.”

The Panthers added to that lead with a two-run homer by Rush Nimmer in the fifth inning of play. Nimmer also picked up the win on the mound, striking out 16 batters and giving up just three hits.

Smothers was glad to see his time come alive at the plate.

“That was the best performance we had hitting the ball all season,” said Smothers.
