Things are looking up for Greenville softball after Tuesday’s game versus McKenzie ended with the third GHS win of the season.

Coach Donna Sunnycalb said the game was really close through the first few innings, crediting McKenzie’s coaching staff.

“Coach Brown has done a good job preparing his girls,” Sunnycalb said. “They were putting the pressure on us early, making us make mistakes.”

As they went into the bottom of the fourth, McKenzie was ahead 4-2.

Then the tables started to turn. GHS scored four runs in the fourth and picked up another one in the fifth. A seven-run rally in the seventh sealed McKenzie’s fate, 14-4.

“We started doing things right, making routine plays and making them make the same mistakes we were making early.”

Right now, Sunnycalb said she is focusing on playing solid defense while trying to keep hitting the ball.

“We worked a lot in practice yesterday on base running,” Sunnycalb said. “I want us to be more aggressive and take more bases.”

Sunnycalb said she’s already starting to see progress from her girls.

“We had 13 hits Tuesday,” Sunnycalb said. “We haven’t been doing that so that is good for us.”

Halfor Hollie batted 3 for 3 with 2 singles and a double. Daphne Moore was credited with the win, striking out 4 batters.

GHS plays their first area game today versus Monroe.

Sunnycalb said she is starting to rely on her team to take responsibility for themselves.

“There are three girls on the team that I put leadership in their hands, and they have embraced that role and took this team under their wings. As a coach you can only do so much.”
