Property taxes due March 31

While April 15 is the date federal income taxes are due, the end of March is the deadline for county property taxes.

Those taxes became delinquent on Jan. 1, but revenue commissioner Sherry McSwean said it will soon be time to take the next step.

“We sent out probate notices on March 1, and people have until March 31 to pay the taxes or come to probate court that day,” she said.

If the taxes remain unpaid, the property will be advertised for three weeks, and then there will be a public tax sale on May 20.

While McSwean said there will be very few that make it to that point, there have been more delinquencies than normal this year.

“I’m not sure if that’s a sign of the economy or what, but we’re working hard to get them paid,” she said. “Personally, I don’t want to sell anyone’s property.”
