Georgiana’s streets are in sore need of repairs, but both finances and weather have hampered efforts to do so.

“With all this rain we’ve had, our streets are in trouble,” said mayor Mike Middleton at the city council’s March meeting.

“We have managed to get some repairs done in between the rain, but there’s a lot more that needs to be done.”

The City of Georgiana has applied for monies through FEMA to help cover the costs of the much-needed repair, Middleton says.

“However, we have not heard anything back from them yet. I assure you just as soon as we do, we will proceed. Actually, we are going to have to go ahead and spend some money for repairs, because it’s got to be done,” Middleton said.

The long-awaited sidewalk to the new school is finally getting underway and should be completed within 45 days “barring weather issues,” the mayor said.

In other city council news, council member Jackie Gandy was chosen as delegate to the League Convention set for May 2010, with Bryon Ward and Clementine Pugh serving as alternates.

Middleton reported the contract for the new Cougar Mountain financial software for the city had been signed and webinars would be set up for training within 90 days.
