Law enforcement officers from across Butler County will be better equipped to handle possible cases of animal abuse through a training course led by Officer Scott Hill of Montgomery.

Hill, who works with the Montgomery Humane Society, is spending two days this month conducting a workshop on animal control laws and procedures at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library.

“We are very excited this is coming to pass, and we believe it will really be of benefit to our community,” Herbert Morton, president of the Butler County Humane Society, said. “The use of the library and the training are at no cost to us.”

The BCHS is covering the costs of lunches for the nine law enforcement professionals taking part in the two-day event, slated for March 10 and March 17.

Personnel from the Greenville, Georgiana and McKenzie Police Departments, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and Animal Control will all be participating, Morton said.

The free workshop, slated for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, will provide the officers with 15 hours of continuing education.

Morton said a second workshop was tentatively scheduled for the fall.

“One is not enough to cover all the officers in the county, obviously,” he said.
