In less than a month, a Crenshaw County native will have a dream come true when her stage play debuts at the Davis Theatre in Montgomery.

Callie Willis’s play “Don’t Count Me Out” is set for its opening performance on March 13.

Willis said the play has been in the works for a long time.

“I’ve been writing for a while, but I’m just stepping out on faith now and doing my first stage play,” she said.

Willis is a native of Highland Home, and she graduated from HHS in 1992.

“I’m living in Montgomery now, and this play has been in production for over eight months,” she said.

If any of her family or friends sees the poster, the playwright’s name might not register at first because Willis wrote it under a pen name – Callie E. James.

Willis said she hopes people are touched and changed by her work.

“It’s sort of a spiritual play, but it also focuses a lot on family,” she said. “It’s about a man trapped between his family and his in-laws, and through tears and frustration he learns what’s most important.”

Willis also said that the play features a few songs.

The premiere is scheduled for March 13 at 7 p.m. at the Davis Theatre with another performance set for March 14 at 5 p.m.

Tickets are available at Calhoun Foods and cost $18 in advance or $25 at the door.
