Auburn running backs coach Curtis Luper said he asks a simple question of high school coaches when considering recruiting their players.

“Tell me what he’s like when you guys (coaches) are not around,” said Luper, entering his second year with head coach Gene Chizik on the Plains. “If the coach says, ‘Well, coach, there’s some issues.’ Those issues are going to go somewhere else. They’re not coming to Auburn.”

Luper was guest speaker of Greenville head coach Ben Blackmon for the Tigers’ Football/Cheerleading Banquet on Monday night.

Greenville finished 11-1, recognizing several players with individual awards and the entire team for its accomplishments.

Kenneth “Big C” Carter, named the state’s top lineman by the Alabama Sports Writers Association, was given special recognition, as were 19 GHS seniors.

Senior Jeffery Gafford was presented with the Mark DeBellis Character Award. DeBellis played at Greenville and gives a senior player a $2,500 scholarship each year.

“We’re so happy to have Mark associated with our program,” said Blackmon. “He came to me a few years ago and said ‘I want to do something for my school.’ And he’s done that.”
