After taking it easy for the last couple of weeks, Samson, my 16-pound tomcat, has decided to make an appearance here at the Luverne Public Library on Monday, Jan. 25. He and Library Director Kathryn Tomlin will host our monthly Craft Day for the children beginning at 4 p.m., and we want all the kids to come out and listen to the brand new story, “Brownie and Pearl Step Out”, and make their own cat ears to wear. While Sam’s not too big into arts and crafts, he’ll be glad to help out if necessary.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the library will host a FREE Resume Workshop from 1-2 p.m. in the Watts Meeting Room. Participants are asked to bring something to write with and some notebook paper to take notes, but we will also have pencils and paper available for you to use. Now is the time to brush up on your job-seeking skills and learn how to write a polished and successful resume. The Luverne Public Library and the Brantley Public Library are teaming up to participate in the state of Alabama’s “The Big Read: Alabama Reads” project.

This is a big push to celebrate and revitalize the role of reading in today’s society.

The two libraries will be hosting several events over the next two months, all centering around the classic novel, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain.

Some of the events coming up include the Feb. 8 Craft Day which will feature a “jumping frog” contest, in honor of Twain’s famous “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”; on Sunday, Feb. 7, the Crenshaw County Historical Society will host a program of superstitions and old wives’ tales beginning at 2 p.m.

Everyone is invited to attend and join in on this discussion and enjoy hearing local folklore….maybe you have something to add to the discussion! We’d love to hear it!

On Tuesday, Feb. 9, Crenshaw County will hold its “Big Read Kickoff” event at 10 a.m. on the courthouse steps, as Luverne Mayor Joe Rex Sport, Brantley Mayor Bernie Sullivan, and Commission Chairman Ronnie Hudson read the first page of “Tom Sawyer.”

Keep your calendars open for Saturday, Feb. 27, and the library’s “Tom Sawyer Pajama Party”! You can drop the kids off in their pajamas and with a blanket from 9-11 a.m., so they can enjoy popcorn, drinks, and the movie “Tom Sawyer.” Be sure and join in on the fun!

We especially want to take the time to thank all of you who have donated books, DVDs, and other items to the library for others to use and enjoy. Wes Davis recently donated an entire tub of children’s books and educational toys for the “Kids’ Corner.” Thank you, Wes!
