The Piece ‘N Patch Quilt Guild met for their annual Christmas party at the Tea Room in Brantley.

They were greeted on entry by owner DeLatha Christian. The Tea Room was tastefully decorated in a Welcome Home Christmas Theme.

The ladies enjoyed visiting while snacking on homemade cookies, candy and toasted pecans while waiting for the delicious meal to be served. The Quilt Guild members were issued a quilt challenge and given challenge fabric one year ago by member Stanna Traver. Each member was challenged to use the fabric to create a project that carried out the theme, “Keep the Home Fires Burning.” The fabric had very vibrant colors and a flame pattern. Two members completed the challenge and presented their projects to the group. Stanna Traver completed a beautiful wall hanging that exemplified the theme of keeping the home fires burning. Linda Jones made a touching tribute to her parents with her challenge fabric. Linda cut out and applied the fabric designs to a mat that surrounded a black and white photo of her mother and father taken while her father served in World War II. She had researched the song that was made popular during World War I by the title, “Keep the Home Fires Burning” and shared the words of the song with the group. Linda’s beautiful tribute to her parents reminded all the members how women down through the ages have so valiantly kept the home fires burning while husbands and fathers have been away from home serving our country or making a living for the family. These two members who completed their projects reminded all Guild members of our commitment to finish quilt and sewing projects so that we can enjoy them.

Member present included: Stanna Traver, Linda Jones, Elaine Bozeman, Debbie Massey, Diane Hargis, Angela Rouse, Edna Norsworthy, Karen Dunbar, Cheryl Bagents and Gayle White.

The Piece ‘N Patch Quilt Guild is always open for new members; join us on any third Tuesday night at the ALFA building in Luverne at 6:00 pm.

Officers for 2010 will be: Elaine Bozeman, president, Cheryl Bagents, vice-president, Debbie Massey, Treasurer, and Karen Dunbar, Secretary.

Friends and neighbors at Meadowcrest Community were saddened to hear of the death of a former residet, Jean Buchanan.

She lived at Meadowcrest for several years and moved to New Orleans to live with her daughter due to her health problems.

Ms. Jean died Monday January 11, 2010 in New Orleans.

The visitation will start at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday January 14 prior to the funeral that will be held at Turners Chapel at 3 p.m.

The South Luverne Baptist Women met Tuesday afternoon January 12, 2010 in the Church fellowship Hall at 2 p.m.

Doris Rogers, director, opened the meeting with scripture reading, devotion and prayer.

Ms. Rogers also gave the prayer patterns.

Edna Norsworthy, mission chairperson, gave a report on the church-wide mission projects which included The Lottie Moon Christmas offering, The Christmas and Thanksgiving Jail ministry and The Law Enforcement cook-out.

Plans were made for future mission projects.

Everyone was encouraged to remember the WMU quarterly meeting to be held at Joquin Baptist Church Monday night January 18.

Jo’s Tours of Montgomery conducted a Christmas tour to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and the Biltmore House in Ashville, North Carolina.

This exciting 2009 trip that was well planned for 5 days was enjoyed by Mattie Pearl Sport, Douglas Cornett, Edward and Margaret Nichols of Luverne and Paul and Judy Wooley and Louise Morgan of Brantley.

The tour included a visit to the Apple Barn, a fantastic performance at the “Smith Family Theatre”, a fun day at Dollywood seeing two Christmas performances, “Christmas in the Smokies” and “Babes in Toyland”.

The highlight of the trip was touring the 250 room home at the Biltmore Estates which was decorated beautifully for Christmas.

Several people from this area attended the Friends Appreciation Reception that was held in honor of Senator “Walking” Wendell Mitchell on Monday night January 11, 2010 from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. at Cambrian Ridge in Greenville, Alabama.

The Crenshaw Relay for Life Teams are getting off to a good start.
