Late last month, the Alabama Sportswriters’ Association released their All-State football teams, and several Crenshaw County players made an appearance on the list.

Leading the way was Brantley head coach David Lowery, who was named Coach of the Year for Class 1A.

He led the Bulldogs to a 14-1 record and a state championship.

It’s the first such award for Lowery, who is in his 11th year as head coach, but he said the credit goes to his players.

“It means you’ve got good players and had a really good year,” he said. “It just comes with winning games.”

Several Bulldogs also made their way onto the team.

Senior Dillion Motes was named an offensive lineman on the 1A first team, Tory Upshaw made the team at defensive back and Devante Porter was named 1A’s athlete.

Punter Jared Hall was given an honorable mention.

Luverne also landed a player on the All-State team with the selection of offensive lineman Robert Freeman, while Ryan McGhee was named an honorable mention running back.

A number of Crenshaw Christian Academy players made the AISA All-State team.

Defensive lineman Cody Moses and punter James Lester were named to the first-team defense, and a pair of Cougars were also given honorable mentions: Nick Kilpatrick at running back and Kyle Furr at linebacker.
