Cookies for a great cause

From old favorites like Thin Mints and Tagalongs, to newer taste treats such as Dulce de Leche and Thank U Berry Munch: It’s that time of the year again. Time to place your order for some of those delicious Girl Scout cookies.

The Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama launched their 2010 Cookie Sale this week. Since 1917, this famous annual event has helped little girls reach for big goals as they develop leadership skills that will follow them throughout their lives.

Kathy Pickens, leader for the Daisy Troop in Greenville, was a Girl Scout for seven years and says she still runs into her former Scout leaders in Greenville.

“I feel like I’ve come full circle – it’s awesome how I look back and see how Scouting really helped mold me into the person I am today,” said Pickens, who is also a teacher at Greenville Middle School.

Daisy Troop is new to the city, with eight first graders “who are just a joy to work with,” she said.

Profits from the annual cookie sale will be used for “fun, rewards and service,” Pickens said.

“We are planning a pizza party, and some of the monies will go to the end-of-the-year awards. Later, the girls will decide which service project in the community they want to support through our fund-raising. The Girl Scout motto is ‘We build girls of courage, confidence and character’ and working to raise funds through the cookie sales is all part of that.”

Cookie orders are now being taken in both Greenville and Georgiana. Cookies are $3.50 a box, payable on delivery. The sale continues through January 20, with delivery slated for the second week in February.

Cookie chair for the county is Georgiana troop leader GayAnn Burkett, who can be reached at 334-376-9977 or 368-1944.

“Any businesses or organizations who would like to have us come and visit them, please let me know and we will arrange it. We may also arrange some booth sales in front of businesses in the county,” Burkett said.

“Scouting is a great program to support and we appreciate everyone who orders cookies from us each year,” Pickens said.
