LBW Community College has been awarded a Governor’s Recovery Act Skills Training Grant which will be used to reopen the Truck Driver Training program previously operated by the South Alabama Skills Training Consortium.

There will be a total of 7 Truck Driver Training sessions with a maximum of five students each for a total of 35 individuals trained. Each six week session meets Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. The next class will begin January 6, 2010.

This program is intended to produce graduates prepared for entry-level employment as Class “A” commercial truck drivers through competency in technical areas of hours of service regulations, vehicle inspection procedures, basic backing skills, defensive driving techniques, and recognition of driving skill standards.

The Enterprise Career Center will certify and screen all individuals interested in the training. Since funding is provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 all students must qualify for WIA to enter the class. Out of the 35 course participants 2/3 must be Dislocated Workers and 1/3 Adults. In addition, each individual must take a skills assessment test by the Career Center to determine reading and math skills.

Interested participants must be 21 years of age or older and referred to Lurleen B. Wallace Community College by the Enterprise Career Center. Prior to starting a class students must provide a Motor Vehicle Driving Record, valid AL Drivers License, pass a DOT Physical and Drug Screen, and have a CDL Learners Permit. The manual for the CDL Learners Permit can be obtained online (dps.alabama.gov) and through the Alabama Department of Transportation offices.
