For the past two years, the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Student Government Association (LBWCC SGA) has teamed up with the Department of Human Resources and the Safe Harbor in order to provide Christmas gifts to children in the Butler County area who are in need.

This year, the SGA members were able to collect enough items to provide Christmas gifts to 29 children.

According to Mollie Waters, SGA sponsor, the success of the project requires help from people all over the community.

“Most of the gifts that we collect come from students at our campus,” said Waters. “We put up an angel tree listing the children’s Christmas requests, then LBW students, faculty, staff, and clubs select an angel from the tree and buy gifts for that child. After the gifts are turned in, the SGA members wrap them and call the parents for pick up.”

Waters said that this year, however, they had to ask for some additional help in order to complete the project.

“Our students did all they could, but times are difficult for most of them,” stated Waters. “Fortunately, the Civitan Club in Greenville helped us a great deal by making a contribution to our efforts. We also had some attorneys in Greenville provide us with some gifts as well.”

Overall, the project was a success.

Jared Williams, SGA president, said that he was pleased with the outcome.

“It is good to know we are making a difference in these children’s Christmas,” said Williams. “We know that people are having a hard time right now, and we are just pleased that we are able to help however we can.”
