BCMS squeaks by Kinston at last second

BCMS 65, Kinston 62 (Boys)

Butler County Magnet School (5-2) advanced in the first round of the Straughn Christmas Shootout, beating Kinston 65-62 on Thursday night. Sophomore Adrian Rich knocked down a three-point shot with two seconds remaining in the game to break the tie and give the Panthers the win.

The Panthers had led by as many as 18 points in the game.

Rich had 11 points in the game. Victor Marshall had 13, LaCory Savage scored 12, and Rodney Cheatham had 11 points.

The Panthers played Brantley in the second round on Friday. The winner advanced to play the McKenzie-Straughn winner for the championship on Saturday.

BCMS won the tournament championship last season.

BCMS 67, McKenzie 49 (Boys)

On Tuesday, LaCory Savage had a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 12 rebounds to help lead BCMS to a 67-49 win over in-county rival McKenzie.

Adrian Rich had 15 points and Derrick Crittenden had 10 also for Butler Count Magnet.

McKenzie was led by Cliff Pugh’s 10 points.

BCMS 59, McKenzie 20 (Girls)

The Butler County Magnet School Lady Panthers routed the McKenzie girls’ team 59-20 on Tuesday night. The Lady Panthers were led by Sharran Matthews’ 13 points, while Melissa Betts scored 12 and Shameka Rodgers added 10 in the victory.

McKenzie’s Aleshia Stuckey had six points and Adrian Maye scored five to lead the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Panthers hosts Luverne on Monday and Straughn on Tuesday.

Tip-off for those games is at 4:30 p.m.
